Leader of the Pack

Do you know a student that has gone above and beyond?  Helped others on campus or in the community? If so, you could nominate them for a Leader of the Pack award.

Leader of the Pack is a program to highlight and recognize student leaders at SMCC. Student leaders from student organizations, athletic teams, tutors, students participating in community service, Resident Assistants, students employed in an office on campus or any other role on campus, can be nominated if they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership. Nominations are accepted for this honor on an on-going basis and a committee of faculty, staff and students will evaluate the nominations and twice each semester will select the students deserving of the award. There is no limit on the number of students that will be selected. Every worthy candidate will be recognized even if it is a semester for student leaders and many nominations are received. The more the merrier!  Students chosen as a Leader of the Pack will receive a  Leader of the Pack tee-shirt and a profile in the CeSIL Report.  

The deadline for submitting forms is Friday, April 18th.

SMCC Senior Art Student Exhibit at 3Fish Gallery

Students graduating from the art program at Southern Maine Community College

 in Spring of 2014 will exhibit work at 3Fish art gallery in downtown Portland from 

April 24^th to April 26^th, with an opening reception on Friday, April 25^th from 5-7 pm.

On exhibit will be a variety of work by eleven graduating students that reflects the wide spectrum of courses at SMCC, as well as the diverse interests and independent achievements of each student: 

• Alex Brown of Weymouth, MA shows a series of screenprints
• Jennifer Lally Connor of South Portland includes mixed media work and an interactive installation
• Sam Creenan of Westbrook exhibits new intergalactic and surreal oil paintings and dry point etching
• Tiffany Crockett of Rome displays multi-media found objects sculpture and acrylic painting
• Alanna Gowen shows acrylic paintings; Jeremy O’Brian of Corning, NY presents a unique display of imaginative versions of everyday objects made from wood
• Chelsea Sanders of Waterboro shows a series of book art portraits
• Erin Sturgeon of Bowdoinham presents charcoal drawings of otherworldly figures from history
• Catherine Anne Thomson of Kennebunkport exhibits oil paintings
• Ali Waterman of Cumberland exhibits photography
• Jason White of Washington State shows a series of collages based on boxes

3Fish art gallery is located at 377 Cumberland Avenue in downtown Portland, Maine.

The show is on view:

     Thursday, April 24 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm

     Friday April 25^th from 1:00 to 7:00 pm

               Opening Reception ~ 5:00 - 7:00 pm

     Saturday April 26^th from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. 

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

April is…  National Poetry Month at SMCC 

From Kevin Sweeney:

Yes, it's that time again - or will be next week.  Regardless of snow, rain, ice, freezing temps, we will begin our annual National Poetry Month at SMCC events.

This year, instead of our long-standing practice of noon at Wednesday in the chapel as our designated time and place, we're making a change.  We will still meet in the chapel, but this year we will meet on TUESDAY instead of Wednesday. 

Also, because Tuesday 11 AM classes don't get out until 12:15, we will run from 12:30 to 1:30.  Actually, it will be more like 12:30 to 1:20 so everyone can get to her/his 1:30 class.

As has been our practice, we invite students, faculty, staff, administrators, community members, strangers walking by and admiring the building, USM students who need a break from the picket lines, those who didn't make the Red Sox roster (Yes, that includes you, Jackie Bradley Jr.), alumni, retired faculty and staff, cookie entrepreneurs (Hi, Amy), friends of Rudy (Hi, Everyone) to join us for these sessions. 

At these sessions people read a favorite poem or poems - not their own work but work they admire, cherish, chuckle over, or refer to during certain life events.  We will be scheduling an Open Mic near the end of April for ANYONE to come and read his/her own work.  We will also schedule, as in past years, several readings given by faculty poets.

So, please pass the word around as you're able.  Please also, sign up to read (you can do that by emailing me) on any of the available Tuesdays.  If you're not inclined to read, please stop by and hear others.  Every year has had some great surprises and some memorable moments.  Here's hoping you either help create some or are around to witness some.

Senator Edmund Muskie's Birth

Join Southern Maine Community College in celebrating the:
 100th Anniversary of Senator Edmund Muskie's birth

SMCC is unveiling a plaque commemorating the centennial of Senator Muskie's birth. The event honors Senator Muskie, who's been called the father of national environmental law and the national environmental law movement. Under his direction, Congress passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and other landmark environmental legislation.

Prom Dress Collection

Do you have a gently used prom dress taking up extra space in your closet? Let us help you out.

On March 17th - 19th, the SMCC Service club will be collecting gently used prom dresses to donate to Cape Closet. Cape Closet redistributes the dresses for free to girls in the Greater Portland area to use for their proms in May.

When:  March 17th - 19th, 11:00 AM -3:00 PM

Where: SMCC Campus Center

While you are home over break, consider digging through your closet. If you have dresses to drop off before the break, come to the CeSIL office with your donations.
