Phi Theta Kappa

Do you have a 3.50 GPA or higher with at least 12 credit hours taken at SMCC? Congratulations!  In recognition of your scholastic achievement, you will be receiving an invitation letter from Phi Theta Kappa within the next few weeks.

Our Mission
Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold:
1.  Recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and;
2.   Provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.

Phi Theta Kappa is the International Honor Society of two-year colleges. Not only is this a recognition of your grades; it's an opportunity to become an active member of your campus community.  Through leadership positions and hallmark education programs in the college chapter (Alpha Chi Nu), you can build skills to add to your resume and four-year college applications.

Phi Theta Kappa offers proprietary programs to help you reach your goals. With CollegeFish.org, your enrollment (free to PTK members!) provides a college completion tool and transfer options. Many students find their best fit utilizing "the fish bowl" in finding schools and scholarship to advance their education.

With your membership, you'll also have free access to Five Star Competitive Edge.  This personal and professional development plan helps build marketable skills and an online portfolio. Get a leg up on the competition for scholarships, transferring and your dream job. Your college classes are only part of your education. Soft skills - such as communication, professional etiquette, team building and critical thinking - are just as important and can give you an advantage over others.

In 2012, Alpha Chi Nu was recognized as Most Distinguished Chapter of the New England Region (56 chapters in 5 states). We've had students serve at New England Regional and International Officer levels. There are lots of opportunity for growth and challenge available to you.

For more information, stop by the CeSIL office or contact Shane Long slong@smccME.edu

Student Leader Profile
Each edition of the CeSIL Report will feature a profile of one of SMCC's amazing student leaders. Recently CeSIL Staff Assistant Dawn Smith caught up with Rose Buckmore to ask her our student leader spotlight questions.

Name:  Rose Buckmore
Major: Liberal Studies, Political Science Concentration
Hometown: Gardiner

What are you involved in on campus?

I’m on the Women’s Soccer and Softball teams, Student Senate (recently elected Vice President), and Activities Committee. I’m also a Student Ambassador, providing tours and information to incoming and potential students.

Why did you get involved?

I like to be involved in my community and in college, this is my biggest community.  Being involved on campus helps me give back to others and meet new people.

What are your long-term goals and how do you think your involvement helps this?

My short-term goal is attending the Maine NEW Leadership training program this Summer.  This will build and enhance my long-term goal of becoming a lawyer, practicing in Maine.  I want to focus on Civil Rights. I believe that my involvement will help me better understand diversity and our political system, plus it helps me network and build relationships.

Who is the person that inspires you and why?

Margaret Chase Smith. She was one of the first women leaders in our country, from Maine, and she really pushed for what she wanted. She strived for her goals and she got there.

SMCC Blood Drive

Just a reminder: the American Red Cross blood donation bus will be visiting the South Portland campus on Tue., February 12th and Wed., February 13th, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

You could make someone's Valentine's Day extra special by giving the gift of life. The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour. And they usually have some tasty snacks after donation...

To make an appointment, please call the American Red Cross @ 1-800-RED CROSS.

Student Leader Profile
Each edition of the CeSIL Report will feature a profile of one of SMCC's amazing student leaders. Recently CeSIL Staff Assistant Dawn Smith caught up with Peter Dore to ask him our student leader spotlight questions.

Name: Peter Dore
Major: Liberal Arts: Art / Architectural Design & Engineering
Hometown: Westbrook, ME

What are you involved in on campus?
Men's Soccer, The Beacon newspaper, Student Senate (President) and the Activities Committee.

Why did you get involved?
I got involved to help strengthen the SMCC student community and feel like a connected member of a productive group; to help people help others.

What are your long-term goals and how do you think your involvement helps this?
To learn and explore all of my passions. It helps me by teaching me lessons about myself and other people. Everyday I learn more and more, but I realize I know less and less.

Who is the person that inspires you and why?

My grandfather. He is an amazing man; a veteran, a teacher, a coach, and an administrator. He has been passionate about everything in life. His strength and love are amazing. Leukemia and two years of chemo have yet to slow him down and he is well into his 80's. Whenever I need inspiration, I look to him.

The CeSIL Report for Thursday, January 31

SMCC Blood Drive

The American Red Cross blood donation bus is returning to the South Portland campus on Tuesday, February 12th and Wednesday, February 13th, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

You could make someone's Valentine's Day extra special by giving the gift of life. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. We're still catching up after the Superstorm Sandy shortfall and the drop in donations that happens when the thermometer drops.

The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour. And they usually have some tasty snacks after donation...

To make an appointment, please call the American Red Cross @ 1-800-RED CROSS.

Call to Arms Heeded

Last week's call to arms for The Beacon received great response. We're looking forward to reading articles and columns from the new writers who stepped forward. There is still room for more voices, especially in the Sports and Business areas.

We are in definite need of a person to cover the sports of SMCC - teams, intramural, people getting together for fun - and the teams in our area. While the Patriots might be out of the Superbowl, we still have hockey (Pirates & Bruins), basketball (Celtics & Red Claws), and baseball will be heating up (Red Sox & Sea Dogs).

On the Business front, there are a lot of people working on some fun and profitable things (Business Club, Investment Club, Entrepreneurial Center). Don't keep it a secret. You never know where the next best idea or great business partner will come from.

If you are interested in contributing to The Beacon, contact Chuck Ott: cott@smccme.edu

C4 Winner

In 2012, Phi Theta Kappa introduced C4 :Community College Completion Corps
C4 is an initiative to encourage community college students to obtain their associates degree.

In November and December, our Phi Theta Kappa chapter (Alpha Chi Nu) held two signing events to encourage students to commit to complete. By completing the pledge form and signing the banner, students indicated their commitment to finish their degrees. To help facilitate and encourage student success, Alpha Chi Nu held a drawing for an iPad ~ and the winner was Chad Plourde.

Chad is completing his degree in the Communication and New Media Studies program. He's a busy dad, a talented multi-media artist and an active participant in his community. When he walked into the CeCIL office to pick up his new iPad, he had a big grin on his face. “This will really help me in my Social Media Marketing class!” he shared.

Congratulations to Chad and to all students who have made the commitment to complete!
