Phi Theta Kappa

Alpha Chi Nu is SMCC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. If you have received an invitation to join, there are numerous reasons to do so. Being a PTK member makes you stand out from the rest, and recognizes you for your accomplishments. Being a member gives you exclusive access to numerous resources for scholarships and transferring to your next college of choice. Benefits include: access to CompetiveEdge - a PTK-powered professional development service, a seal on your diploma, and eligibility to over $97 million in scholarships through PTK's Common Application.

Not a member but still want some of these benefits? No problem!! CollegeFish.org, is like Cupid.com for students to find matching colleges and scholarships. This once PTK-exclusive service, is now open to ALL community college students!! And the best part? It's FREE!!!

If you'd like to hear more, get help with navigating the websites, or learn how you can be involved in your chapter's exciting projects, then join us Mondays in Ross Tech Room 104 from 12:00pm - 1:00pm!! An Officer Team member will be on hand to help you!

Captain's Cupboard

The Captain's Cupboard is stocked, and the doors are open! We are a student-run food pantry on campus serving students (and families) in need. There are no barriers to usage, and we simply ask that you bring a student ID with a current semester sticker. The Captain's Cupboard is located right next to the light tower at 126 McKernan Drive, inside of the Captain's House. Hours of distribution are Monday through Friday, from 9am - 3pm. We have proudly distributed over 12,000 lbs of food since opening last fall, and we look forward to distributing many thousands more. Also, stay-tuned for another Good Shepherd Food Bank direct distribution!!!

If you would like to help us, we are always looking for committed volunteers to assist with front-desk operations, and have a variety of upcoming side jobs. So, if you want to give back, and make YOUR impact on our campus, stop by to inquire or email us at: captainscupboard@smccme.edu

Polar Express Volunteers Needed

Volunteer Elves needed for the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad’s Polar Express!
Ho, Ho, Ho! It’s time for the Polar Express to make its annual appearance at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad.  Volunteer elves are needed for this enchanted holiday ride. As elves, volunteers make the hot chocolate, deliver cocoa and cookies aboard the train and help Santa to give out the first gift of the season.  We are looking for people to help make magic aboard this special train.

This family friendly event runs the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 28 through Dec. 23.  The train runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and Monday, December 22 and Tuesday December 23.  We ask that people volunteer for three (3) nights out of our 14 day event, about 6 hours each night, but we are happy to have volunteers for as many nights as they can give.

This is a great way to give back to the community, have a fun time with friends and experience the magic of the season!  BelieveThis is the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad’s biggest annual fundraiser – Thank you for your support!

For more information and to volunteer contact Jennifer Halm-Perazone, Volunteer Coordinator at; 207-828-0814, MNGRR 58 Fore St., #6, Portland ME 04101 or polarexpress@mainenarrowgauge.org

Damnation Land

A retrospective screening of some darkly weird films from past Damnationland programs at the Southern Maine Community College!

This program includes:
• Carrying Place, directed by The Sisters Grumbling
• Shambles, directed by Torrey Alan Johnson
• Telephoto, directed by Jeffrey Griecci
• Raid of the Vomit-Blood Fiends, directed by Ryän J. Wilsön II
• Natal, directed by SMCC's own Corey Norman

This screening is free and open to the public, and some of the filmmakers will be in attendance to chat with the audience about their filmmaking adventures afterward. While these films are not rated, they do contain strong language and depictions of violence, and therefore may not be appropriate for younger children or sensitive viewers. That said, invite anyone you think might be interested in sitting in a dark room and freaking out with us!
