The CeSIL Report for Friday, April 12

Phi Theta Kappa International Convention

Six members of the leadership team from SMCC's Alpha Chi Nu chapter of Phi Theta Kappa traveled to San Jose, CA last weekend to attend the annual International Convention. Along with advisor, Shane Long, the students attended seminars and conferences to help enhance the learning environment on campus. Keynote speakers included Geoff Colvin (award-winning author, broadcaster, and speaker) and Billie Jean King (sports revolutionary, social justice pioneer, and entrepreneur).

While attending the New England Regional meeting, we received wonderful news. One of our chapter officers - Minh Nguyen, NE Regional VP for 2012-13 - was offered a $20,000 scholarship to attend Wentworth Institute of Technology. Congratulations Minh!

Alpha Chi Nu will continue to explore the Honors Study topic "The Culture of Competition" as part of their 2013-14 Honors in Action and Hallmark studies college projects. If you are interested in opportunities for learning and leadership within Phi Theta Kappa, contact Shane Long at slong@smccme.edu

Narrow Gage Railroad Volunteers

Do you enjoy history? Do you like chatting with people? Are you mechanically-inclined? Enjoy the view of Casco Bay in summer? Do you appreciate trains? Maybe you're a student or recently retired and looking for a fun and useful way to fill up a few hours a week? The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum is holding a Volunteer Open House on Thursday, April 18, from 9:00 a.m. until Noon.

The museum is located on 58 Fore St. ( in the Portland Company Complex)So far, I haven't been able to add images on my own from this work study computer. If you are adding images, send them to Shane. The formatting can get funky - try to make this one of the last steps that you do.
