College Visits and Beyond

Are you thinking of continuing your learning beyond SMCC?  The office of Career and Transfer Services is available to help explore options with you.  There are quite a few colleges visiting the South Portland Campus in January and February. Mid-Coast will start visits in March.

Sharon Bannon, Director of Career and Transfer Services, sends out emails to students as new colleges are added to the schedule. You also can check upcoming visits in the Career & Transfer Services section under the Students tab in MY SMCC:  https://my.smccme.edu/ICS/Students/Career_and_Transfer_Services.jnz\

A Call to Arms … Pens … Keyboards …
for The Beacon

During Winter Break, I had the interesting job of organizing past issues of the campus newspaper, The Beacon.  Filing – fun job, right? Well, more so than you might think. We had issues dating back to 1998 (The SMTC NET). I saw various publication name changes, a wide variety of mast head styles and outlines, and a couple of different size formats. It was interesting to read the headlines and see what was happening around school over the years.

There were certain issues and topic threads that consistently popped up: parking, bookstore, enrollment, politics, volunteer opportunities. I also noticed that participation in the paper waxed and waned. We are currently in a bit of a waning cycle. The Beacon wants you!

It’s a new semester and an open opportunity to contribute to one of the primary vehicles for students to express themselves. Some of you are new to campus, some have just completed your first semester and some have been around for a while. The Beacon publishes news items, political columns, human interest stories, original narratives, artwork, ads, calls for volunteers – it’s produced by students for students. If you are interested in learning more about The Beacon, stop by the CeSIL office or contact Chuck Ott: cott@smccme.ed

2013 Maine NEW Leadership Summer Institute

We just received word of a great Leadership opportunity for undergraduate college women: Maine NEW Leadership - Public Leadership Education for College Women

The 2013 Institute will be held at the University of Maine in Orono from May 30 to June 4.  This is a wonderful opportunity offered by the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center providing a FREE six-day residential, non-partisan training program to undergraduate college women. The goal is to educate and empower women to become civic and political leaders. All backgrounds, interests and majors welcome.

To be eligible, undergraduates must either be from Maine or attending college in Maine.  Graduating college seniors are eligible to apply. Applications must be postmarked or hand-delivered by March 21, 2013.    Here's a short video: http://vimeo.com/55492693  in which several NEW Leadership graduates describe how the program changed their lives and inspired them to become engaged community leaders. We hope you find inspiration in their stories!

Additional information and application forms are available at:  http://mcspolicycenter.umaine.edu/55-2/maine-new-leadership/.
