Midcoast Campus Volunteer Opportunities

For students at the Midcoast keep in mind that Bowdoin College has offered to let student in the Brunswick area connect to their Center for the Common Good.

On Saturday September 20th students are invited to work with Tedford Housing in Brunswick and a group of Bowdoin students/professors. If you are interested, space is limited so please email Madelyn Holm as soon as possible.

The College Guild is a free mail-in education program for inmates. The College Guild sends short lessons with questions to prisoners, then we, the volunteers, read what they've written and provide positive feedback. It would be a great way for students at SMCC to get involved because they would simply have to come to an orientation and then would be able to receive letters at their own address and respond on their own time. Orientation for this program is Sunday September 14th at 3:30 at Bowdoin College. email mholm@smccme.edu for more information

Habitat for Humanity Build September 20th in Freeport. Students from both campuses are welcome to join. Space is limited to 7 students so sign up today! email mholm@smccme.edu to sign up.

The BEACON Wants You!

Captain's Cupboard Hours

The Captain’s Cupboard will be open to all current students for distribution between the hours of 9am – 3pm, Monday through Thursday.

If you are a student that is taking has a service-learning or volunteering component, or are an engaged student that wants to give back to our beloved campus community, we would love to help you fulfill your requirements and/or desires.

We still have hours open to Front Desk volunteers throughout the week, and for those that want more involvement, we are currently setting up an Advisory Board to oversee all of our operations and services.

Lastly, soon we will be offering Professional Development Workshops through The Captain’s Cupboard. These will cover necessary aptitudes such as interviewing skills and resume writing.

Student Senate

The SMCC Student Senate meets weekly on Wednesdays at 4:30 PM in the Jewett Hall Auditorium.  Meetings are open to all students. Information on become a voting member is provided below.

What is Student Senate?
Student Senate is the student government of Southern Maine Community College.
It is the mission of the Student Senate to provide responsive and effective leadership for the student body, to promote the general welfare and the engagement of students in the life of the college and the community, and to preserve a representative form of government. Student Senate is open to all students, advocates for the rights and concerns of students and supports and promotes the free exchange of ideas.

What does Student Senate do?
The Student Senate is involved in the following:
Making decisions and implementing ideas regarding college policy and student life.
Managing a large portion of the money collected from the Student Activity Fee which are used to fund student organizations and student activities.
Overseeing clubs and other student organizations.
Planing and running activities for the student body.
Advocating for the student body students regarding issues that are of concern to them.

How can I join the Student Senate?
Any student can join the Student Senate. Each fall semester the Senate's membership is determined by the college's enrollment. For each 250 students at SMCC there is one Student Senator, plus one Senator for each student organization and one senator to represent each residence hall.

Senators representing the general Student Body must fill out a Petition for Student Senate Membership and have 25 current students sign the petition supporting your membership on the Student Senate. If there are more students applying for membership then there are open seats then a general election will be held to elect the Senator for those seats. If there are uncontested seats open then new Senators are elected during a regular Student Senate meeting. Students are elected into the Senate on a rolling basis. Officer elections are held each spring for the next academic year.

Senators representing a student organization can present themselves at any Student Senate meeting with documentation from the student organization they represent to be sworn in a member of the Senate.
Senators representing students living in the residence halls can present themselves at any Student Senate meeting with documentation from the hall they represent to be sworn in a member of the Senate.
