Maine Charitable Mechanic Association Internship

The Maine Charitable Mechanic Association is a social organization which has actively sought to support skilled tradesmen in their crafts and their entrepreneurial endeavors. To meet this goal the MCMA has run educational activities, brought lecturers to Portland, and given scholarships to students in the trade industries.  The MCMA is currently looking to reestablish itself as a key support in the maker community by questioning its role, and place as a primary information hub/resource.

MCMA is seeking an SMCC student to participate in an unpaid internship conducting research on the changing landscape of "makers". What maker meant 200 years ago is dramatically different than today. Maker once meant anyone from mechanic to craft potter, where as today that definition might also include computer programmer, architectural engineer, or graphic designer. This internship would include researching background, new trends in the field, and collaborate with MCMA and other community organizations/businesses to further the mission of the organization.

Intern Requirements:
  • Part time or Full time Unpaid
  • Starting Mid-May working until Early Fall
  • Has basic understanding of the role of making and maker in American Society
  • Capable of doing independent research, and strong writing skills
  • Willingness to participate in focus groups, and strategic meetings

Please contact Pamela Plumb at (207) 772-2680 or pplumb@aol.com or stop into the CeSIL office to speak with Madelyn Holm (mholm@smccme.edu) for more information.
