FREE THANKSGIVING MEAL 

On Saturday 30th November, SMCC  will host a Thanksgiving dinner for students who may not manage to be with their families during the Thanksgiving holiday. If you are one of those students, please register  as soon as possible. Dinner begins at 2 pm in the Culinary Center on the South Portland Campus. 

In order to attend this event, you are required to register with Chomba Kaluba at ckaluba@smccme.edu. Registration is open until 4 pm Tuesday, November 26.

Oxford Amfam Hunger Banquet 

When:  Thursday, December 5th at 5:00pm

Where:  Southern Maine Community College Dining Hall, South Portland, ME.

Open to all community and SMCC staff/faculty/students. All proceeds will benefit the on-campus food pantry: The Captain's Cupboard. In addition to dinner, guests will hear from Jim Hanna the Executive Director of Maine Coalition for Food Security, talk about hunger in Maine and programs focused on helping Mainers. After dinner, guests are welcome to stay for a free screening of "A Place at the Table", a documentary exploring childhood hunger, the cost of nutrition, and the changing face of poverty in the United States. Guests are also encouraged to bring along food, toiletries, clothing, or school supplies to donate to the Captain's Cupboard. 

Minimum donation of $10.00 ~ all proceeds go directly to The Captains Cupboard

 There are still a few days remaining to donate items to the Captain's Cupboard, SMCC's Food Pantry for the You Give We Give challenge. The Academic Department, Dorm Floor and Student Club to raise the most food or monetary donations for the SMCC Food Pantry wins a Pizza Party!

The winners will be announced on November 26th.

The Maine Narrow Gauge RR is looking for College Students to become Merry Chef Elves who can help bring to life this timeless story by Chris Van Allsburg.  

Chef Elves will deliver hot chocolate and cookies aboard this magical train and help Santa to give out the first gift of the season!

Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad's biggest annual fundraiser - 

Thank you for your support!

This family friendly event runs the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 29 through Dec. 23.

The Train runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and then Monday Dec 23.

This is a great way to give back to your community and to meet other students in the area.

Become a part of this enchanted journey!

As a Polar Express volunteer we ask that you volunteer for three (3) days of our 13 day event,

if you can, about 6 hours each day (2:15 pm-7:30 pm, Fridays 3:30 pm-7:30).

You will receive a light supper each night you volunteer, 

and receive one complimentary ticket for the

Polar Express!

Polar Express Schedule:

·         Friday, Saturday, November 29, 30 & Sunday December 1

·         Friday, Saturday, Sunday: December 6 thru December 22

·         Monday, December 23

·         Trains run 2:45pm, 4:00pm, 5:15pm & 6:30pm 

             (The 4:00pm will be the first train on Fridays)

"The Last of the Doughboys"

Maine author, Richard Rubin, is coming to the SMCC South Portland Campus to talk about his new book: "The Last of the Doughboys. The Forgotten Generation and their Forgotten World War.”  on Thursday, November 21^st .

Local historian and SMCC history instructor Herb Adams will provide opening remarks. The event will be located in the Learning Commons Lounge from 2:00 - 3:30 pm 

The event is co-sponsored by the Learning Commons and the SMCC Veterans Club.

Rubin's book, "The Last of the Doughboys. The Forgotten Generation and their Forgotten World War," will be available to purchase.

The Health and Wellness club is sponsoring a food drive competition in support of SMCC’s food pantry, the Captain’s Cupboard. 

The club/department/dorm floor/group that raises the most in donations for the food pantry will win a Pizza Party!  Each food item will count as $1.  The group that collects the most, wins a Pizza Party on Tuesday, Dec. 3^rd.

Donations of non-perishable food items and monetary funds can be dropped off in the CeSIL office until Tuesday, November 26^th.

SMCC Annual Holiday Card

It’s time to choose the 2013 SMCC Annual Holiday Card design.  The Communications and Marketing Department is seeking your help.

Would you like the opportunity to see your creativity represented in the SMCC community? If you have a drawing, digital artwork, photograph or other artwork medium you think would be perfect for our holiday card, please share it. One or more submissions will be chosen to be featured on our card and your name will be attributed to the artwork. Winners will receive a bag full of SMCC goodies!

Relay for Life

In the fight against cancer, silence is the last thing we need. Your local American Cancer Society Relay For Life event is a great place to take action and make noise. The Relay For Life movement features community and campus events that offer an inspiring opportunity to honor cancer survivors, promote how individuals can reduce their cancer risk, and raise money to help end cancer. Today, with the support of thousands of volunteers, the American Cancer Society is helping save more than 400 lives a day. And we won't stop until we finish the fight against cancer!

What Is A Relay Event?
- Organized, overnight community fundraising walk
- Teams of people camp out around a track
- Members of each team take turns walking around the track
- Food, games and activities provide entertainment and build camaraderie
- Family-friendly environment for the entire community

Because it’s a team event, individual participants are not required to be there the entire time. But it's so much fun, you'll find it hard to leave! What Makes a Relay Event Special?

Many moments create the unique Relay experience. Event details vary by location, but all events have key moments in common:

 Survivors Lap
- During the Survivors Lap, all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap around the track, celebrating their victory over cancer while cheered on by the other participants who line the track. Relay For Life events also recognize and celebrate caregivers, who give time, love, and support to their friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers facing cancer.

Luminaria Ceremony
- The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark, so we can remember people we have lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past, and support those whose fight continues. Candles are lit inside of personalized bags and are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer.

History of Relay For Life
- In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern – cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising more than $4 billion to fight cancer.'
